Leather, suede and fur care: what to do (and not do) at home

How to keep leather supple, suede unstained, and fur in good condition between professional cleanings.

Leather, suede and fur each need their own care. None of them respond well to water, household detergents or machine washing.

For leather, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and condition once or twice a year so the hide stays supple. Avoid heaters, direct sun and plastic bags β€” leather needs to breathe.

For suede, brush gently in one direction with a suede brush to lift dirt. Treat splashes with a suede eraser. Avoid water; if it does get wet, let it dry at room temperature and brush back up the nap.

For fur, store on a wide hanger in a breathable cotton garment bag, away from heat and humidity. Furs benefit from professional cleaning and conditioning periodically β€” this is specialty work and we quote it at intake.
