Dry cleaning uses a liquid solvent instead of water. Several solvents are in common use today, each with different properties.
Perchloroethylene, or 'perc', has been the industry standard for decades. It is effective on oil-based stains and is widely regulated.
Hydrocarbon solvents are a more recent class, often described as gentler on fabric. They are common in modern shop installations.
Other systems include liquid silicone (sometimes branded GreenEarth) and wet cleaning, a controlled water-based process for some delicate fabrics.
