Alterations and tailoring: what is possible (and what is not)

A practical guide to common alterations — hems, take-ins, sleeve work, zipper replacement — and the limits of fitting an existing garment.

Most everyday alterations are straightforward. Hemming trousers, taking in a waist, shortening sleeves, replacing a zipper, and sewing a button are common requests handled by an on-site tailor.

Some alterations are more involved. Tapering a suit jacket, fitting a dress through the bust, or reshaping shoulders require multiple fittings and skilled hand work. These are quoted at intake.

There are limits. A garment can be taken in much more easily than it can be let out — once the original seam allowance is gone, there is no fabric left to work with. Heavily structured garments, ornate beading, and some linings constrain what is possible.

At Joy fittings are by appointment so the tailor can pin the garment with you and confirm what is and is not possible before any work starts.
